Celebrated opera singer Zurab Sotkilava has died aged 80 after the extended illness, according to TASS.
As per the general director of the Bolshoi Theatre Vladimir Urin, the artist has been struggling with this disease until his last breath.
Soviet People’s Artist-to-be was born in Sukhumi. Zurab did not even think of the artist’s career until he turned twenty. A young man played football; he was a captain of the Georgian national team. He graduated from the polytechnic institute in Tbilisi and only afterwards he entered conservatory. After graduation, he became a singer of the Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and practiced in La Scala in Milan.
His debut in the Bolshoi theatre happened in 1973. Apart from his work in the theatre, he taught a lot in Moscow conservatory. Most famous opera signers were among his students.
Zurab Sotkilava received many Soviet rewards, such as Orders of Russia and Georgia. The artist got Orders of Merits to the Motherland for his large personal contribution into development of national culture and long-lasting fruitful creative career.
