Vyacheslav Nikonov: Sevastopol might become meeting point for large Russian World

08.09.2017

Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education and Science Vyacheslav Nikonov took part at the scientific conference in Sevastopol on September 6.

The central conference topic is Sevastopol as Center of Russian Soft Power in the Whole Mediterranean World. It was held in the Center of international political researches of the Mediterranean Region of Sevastopol State University, according to the press-service of the State Duma Committee on Education and Science. Sevastopol governor Dmitry Ovsyannikov, the Chairman of the legislative Assembly of Sevastopol Ekaterina Altabaeva, Sevastopol State University Rector Vladimir Nechaev and well-known scientists together with industry experts took part in the conference.

“Soft power” is a popular term. Vyacheslav Nikonov defined it as an ability to influence other countries through cultural and humanitarian cooperation instead of money and weapons. However, the soft power only is not enough for the successful development, he added. “No country in the world relies on the soft power only, the strength of any state is a complex of factors where military force does not play the least important role, especially in the modern world” the politician has stated.

“Sevastopol might become a meeting point for the large Russian world, scattered as a result of the Revolution and the Civil War all over the world. Sevastopol is a pearl of our civilization. Probably it is the most ancient city of the modern Russian Federation, or at least one of the most ancient ones, Nikonov believes.
