India celebrates anniversary of Russian orientalist Yuri Roerich

indigotour.ruThe anniversary of outstanding scholar in Oriental studies, an elder son of the well-known painter Nikolai Roerich was celebrated in India. This year is 115th birth anniversary of the scholar, TASS informs. A gala ceremony was held at the estate museum of the Roerich family, situated in the Himalayan foothills.

Russian and Indian scientists, researchers, figures of culture and representatives of the church took part at the ceremony. Yuri Roerich became known as a talented orientalist, linguist and anthropologist. He spoke thirty languages.

The sacred rite of guru -pudgi conducted by the monks from Panga monastery from Kullu valley opened the celebration. Professor Tshering Dordge a well-known specialist in the field of Buddhist and Tibetan studies was present at the ceremony. He was a good friend of the Roerich family. He managed to buy a patch of land in the high-mountain valley Lakhul where Nikolai Roerich used to have his summer studio. The scientist gathered finances and restored the building to research results of Roerich’ expeditions on this territory.

To commemorate the memory of Roerich and his work in the field of Buddhist iconography, teachers and students of Tibetan school of arts prepared an exhibition of thankas – Buddhist icons on fabrics for his birth anniversary.
Concert prepared by pupils of Children’s Art Academy named after Elena Roerich ended up the celebration.
