US to close one of Russian Consulates

11.08.2017

wikipedia.orgThe information about Washington’s intention to close one of four Russian General Consulates has leaked to mass media, writes newspaper Kommersant. Russian diplomatic circles believe that most likely US wants to bring the number of Consulates to parity with Russia. There are four Russian consulates in New York, San Franzisco, Seattle and Houston, and only three US consulates in Saint Petersburg, Vladivostok, and Ekaterinburg.

Political scientists assume that shutdown of one of the Russian consulates may be linked to Putin’s decision to draw down US Embassy staff in Russia by more than 750 persons. The latter decision was taken due to the new round of anti-Russian sanctions. Meanwhile Russian Foreign Ministry has stressed that new Washington sanctions would be followed by symmetrical response from Moscow.
