Russia, Finland and Norway to take part in Kizhi Regatta Festival

Annual Folk Festival of Traditional Shipbuilding and Navigation Kizhi Regatta has started today, on the 1st of August in Karelia, according to TASS. It is conducted for the 21st time already.

The Festival agenda traditionally includes racing of tilt boats. Several dozens of crews are among its participants. The tournament gained an international status this year, because apart from the Russian team, teams from Norway and Finland are going to participate in the festival too. The racing route lies along the Onezhskoye lake around the island.

Besides, young guests of Kizhi will learn to build boats and will launch them under the guidance of the experienced instructors. The forum programme implies an awarding ceremony of shipbuilders’ contest winners titled Peoples’ Boat.

Among other activities are theatre performances, master-classes of cooking fish dishes and their tasting as well as a concert by international Shanty Choir MIR. An exhibition fair will be opened.

Kizhi Regatta festival was held at the end of 90ies for the first time. Over the time of its existence, it turned into one of the Karelian touristic potential symbols. Kizhi Gavan exhibition was arranged at the venue of the Festival conduction three years ago. Among the exhibited items were boats of native peoples living in Karelia and in the North- West of Russia.
