Assumption Cathedral in Sviyazhsk included in UNESCO heritage list

ostrovgrad.orgAssumption Cathedral in the island town of Sviyazhsk is added in UNESCO heritage list, TASS reports. This decision was taken at the last World Heritage Committee session in Krakow, Poland.

Sviyazhsk is the island town of Russia’s republic of Tatarstan. The town is located on the hill, with an area of 62 hectares. It was founded by Ivan the Terrible in the middle of the 16th century as a Russian army advance base for conquering Kazan.

Sviyazhsk is the first Orthodox city in the Middle Volga River region. The Russian architecture masterpiece, Assumption Cathedral and Monastery was built of stone 10 years after Sviyazhsk. The world’s only fresco of horse-headed St. Christopher is located in the cathedral.

Let us recall that the Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO Alexander Kuznetsov has stated that the responsible persons have done a big job to prepare the UNESCO heritage list application. A considerable effort has been made to restore and renovate the town as well.

It's worth reminding that earlier Russian-Mongolian project Daursky State Biosphere Reserve (Daurian Steppes) was included in UNESCO heritage list.
