Vancouver celebrated 80th anniversary of first USSR-USA nonstop flight

Vancouver, WA celebrated 80th anniversary of the first transarctic flight from USSR to USA performed by the crew of Valery Chkalov, TASS informs.

Russian Consul General to Seattle Valery Timashev, Consulate representatives, acting Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle, Deputy Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Alexander Radkov, grandson of Valery Chkalov and many others were present at the meeting organized in the Fort Vancouver National park.

City orchestra played Russian and American hymn songs, the officials laid flowers to the monument dedicated to the flight and our honored pilots.

Alexander Radkov addressed a welcome speech to the audience. He has commented that the record-breaking flight has a deep symbolic meaning and expressed opinion that this deed of the crew headed by Valery Chkalov reinforced relations between Soviet Union and USA. He has added that the flight from Moscow to Vancouver was a real triumph of the Soviet aviation duly appreciated by American people and US President Franklin Roosevelt.

Acting Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle has agreed with the Rossotrudnichestvo representative and added that nonstop flight became one of the first important stages of the Golden Century of the World Aviation.

After the official part, guests attended the museum exhibition in the Pearson Air Museum, opened in honor of the events of 80 years ago.
