Memorial to the Soviet prisoners of war established in Vienna

22.06.2017

Captured Soviet soldiers' memory is perpetuated in Austria's capital, TASS informs. The grand opening of the obelisk dedicated to the Soviet prisoners of war took place on the Vienna central cemetery. The event coincides with the Russian Memory and Sorrow Day, dedicated to the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Russian diplomats, Austrian authorities, and Russian compatriots took part in the ceremony.

Let us remind you that 183 relics of Soviet prisoners of war were located next to the Cemetery entrance. For years these relics were not discovered, and only in 1980s the research was completed.

Sculptor Denis Stretovich has designed 4-meter monument topped by a five-pointed star.

The idea of creating the memorial belongs to the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS). This initiative was supported by both Foreign Ministries. The obelisk was made in Russia, and later shipped to Austria. The local Ministry of Internal Affairs helped to create the monument foundation, and to install it.

According to RMHS Executive Director Vladimir Kononov, names of all buried soldiers will appear later on additional pylons. This event will coincide with the day of Vienna liberation from Fascism, or with the Next Victory Day in Russia.
