Flickr/O-la-la!Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a law banning production and wearing St. George ribbons at the territory of the country, TASS informs.

In line with the amendments made in the Ukrainian Code of administrative violations, from now on, public demonstration of St. George ribbon in Ukraine is out of law. The fine (presuming confiscation of the ribbon) for such infringement is up to 90 US dollars. The fine of around 190 US dollars and up to 15 days in custody are measures stipulated for repetitive or systematic law infringement.

An exception is made for World War II veterans, who owns the corresponding awards and museum values. Petro Poroshenko has commented his law that St. George ribbon is “a symbol of political separatism and aggression against Ukraine now”.

St. George Ribbon is a part of St. George Order. It appeared as early as times of Catherine the Great. St. George Cross for courage and valor was bestowed to soldiers and non-commissioned officers in Imperial Russia. Plain soldiers considered the award as one of the most prestigious one.

The ribbon with black and orange stripes decorated the Order of Glory and some other medals in the Soviet Union. At present, St. George ribbon is an inseparable symbol of the Great Victory celebration.
