Fantastic results for 19th Century masterpieces sales on Sotheby’s

View of Venice with Santa Maria della Salute in the Background, Alexei Bogoliubov (1824-1896)Recent Russian Art Auction at Sotheby's achieved a total of just under £10 million, with a sell-through rate of over 90% by value. The experts have stressed that the certain stars of the sale were two landscape canvases by famous “Peredvizhniks" (The Wanderers) Isaak Levitan and Alexei Bogolioubov.

Two Levitan’s landscapes where sold for £908,750 each, while Bogoliubov’s View of Venice with Santa Maria della Salute in the Background went under the hammer for £500,750, becoming another highlight of the 19th century section.

Sotheby’s experts comment that outstanding results were seen across all collecting categories. A 1922 view of bathers at Abramtsevo by Petr Konchalovsky made £488,750. There was a fierce bidding for two paintings by Konstantin Yuon; as the result his 1914 canvas The Kremlin at Night on the Eve of the Coronation of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich soared over its pre-sale estimate to make £728,750.

A strong array of avant-garde graphics by Alexander Rodchenko, Liubov Popova, Nadezhda Udaltsova and their descendants non-conformists were very well-presented at the last Sotheby’s auction as well. The total sales sum reached up £9,866,125.
