Prestigious NYC School celebrates Pushkin's birthday for the first time

Staten Island Technical High School ranked as one of the best in the city and 35th in the National ranking joins Pushkin birthday celebrations for the first time, TASS reports.

Russian language is being taught at this school for the last 40 years. According to the Russian language and literature teacher Natalia Ushakova, all 1200 high schoolers learn Russian, which is one of the obligatory languages there.

Today's celebration would launch the annual tradition of celebrating poet's birthday every year. Kids will make media presentations talking of the poet's role in the world culture. Pushkin's poems are to be recited all day.

Also historical events of Pushkin's times will become the topic of English language and history lessons.

Art competition results also will be acknowledged. Natalia Ushakova has stated that school kids reading his poems by memory, and they were very impressed with an idea of Pushkin birthday celebration.

Staten Island Technical High School students used to visit USSR in 1980s, when Russian language course has started. Now this tradition is going to be recovered.
