The laureates of the Benois de la Danse Award were announced on the historical stage of Russia Bolshoi Theatre yesterday. It was the 25th anniversary Benois de la Danse Award Ceremony, TASS reports.
The Award is given for the past season stagings. It is unofficially called the “Ballet Oscar” for being the most prestigious ballet prize in the world.
There were seven choreographers nominated for the Award. On the eve of May 30 the jury headed by famous choreographer Yury Grigorovich announced the winners.
One the most distinguished choreographers in the ballet world today Marcia Haydee received "For Lifetime Achievement" award.
Crystal Pite from Paris Opera Ballet received the prize in the Best Choreographer nomination, and his colleague from the same theatre Lyudmila Pagliero was granted The Best Ballerina award, along with National Ballet of Uruguay’s Maria Ricetto. The Best Dancer Award went to Denis Rodkin (Bolshoi Theater) and Ugo Marshand from Paris Opera Ballet.
Accepting the honorary award, Denis Rodkin thanked the jury and mentioned his teacher Alexander Vetrov and his dance partner Svetlana Zakharova. He’s also said that he was raised up on Grigorovich performances.
The Ceremony will conclude tonight with Stars of Benois de la Danse charity gala concert where the best world dancers will perform choreography pieces by Roland Petit, Wayne McGregor, Jean-Christophe Maillot, and others.
Proceeds from the ticket sales shall be donated to the ballet veterans in need.
