Memorial to the Soviet prisoners of war will be established in Vienna

10.05.2017

The memory of Soviet soldiers who were captured during WW2 will be set in stone on Austrian territory, as per TASS. The monument is intended to be built on the central cemetery in Vienna, next to their graves. This cemetery is very famous since memory of many important and famous personalities are located there.

According to the head of Russian-Austrian center of history and culture Pamyat (Memory) Julia Egger, 183 relics of Soviet prisoners of war in this cemetery are located next to the Cemetery entrance. There are no official graves but the records attesting the burials are available. To find exact place where the Soviet soldiers' remains are located and to draw a list of names the center Pamyat (The Memory) had to do a very complex research.

The memorial opening would be held in conjunction with the day of the sorrow memory, the beginning of The Great Patriotic War 2 in Russia, June 22nd. The idea of creating the memorial belongs to the Russian Military Historical Society. This initiative was supported by both Foreign Ministries.
