Russian Foreign Ministry: People’s opinion about Montenegro in NATO should not be disregarded

13.04.2017

RF Foreign Ministry

Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that attempts of Montenegro government to join NATO are counterproductive without consideration of the people’s opinion, as per TASS.

This statement was made at the meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers of Russia and Italy Alexei Meshkov and Vincenzo Amendola during discussion of the situation at the Balkans.

Russian Foreign Ministry points out that official Podgorica is dragging the country into NATO bypassing the referendum on such an important question and ignoring the opinion of its people.

The day before U.S. President Donald Trump sent a notification letter to the senate informing that he had granted ratification of Montenegro accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance.

Protests against government politics of the country’s joining NATO continue in Montenegro. Oppositional parties demand a referendum on this question.
