Consul General of Italy in Saint Petersburg Leonardo Bencini handed out Order of the Star of Italy to a modern Russian theatre director and People’s artist of Russia Lev Dodin, as per TASS. The corresponding decree was signed by President Sergio Mattarella.

Bencini highlighted “high professionalism of the Maly Drama Theatre” and made an emphasis on Dodin’s achievements in the field of “upbringing a constellation of eminent actors”.

Dodin gratefully accepted the award and modestly commented that Italy and the Italian culture influenced his world perception a lot and that Italy made a much greater contribution for him than he has made for this country and its people.

Maly Drama Theatre headed by Lev Dodin took road tours around Italy many times. The name of renowned art director is familiar to Italian audience.

By the way, this is not the first awarding ceremony for Russian cultural workers. As the Russkiy Mir Foundation advised, the artistic director of Alexandrinsky Theatre Valery Fokin was awarded with Order of the Star of Italy earlier.
