Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov presented his artworks to the Tretyakov Gallery

07.04.2017

Vyacheslav Prokofiev/TASS Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov granted his two works of art to the Tretyakov gallery, as per TASS. The gala ceremony of artworks’ granting was held at The Thaw exhibition. The museum representatives noted that museum collections did not store works of this artist before and thanked Alexei Leonov profusely.

One of the pictures titled “Exit to Open Space. 25.03. Year 1965” reflects a historic moment of exiting into space and dates back 2006. The second drawing represents a space landscape. It is painted in 2011.

Leonov himself said that he had thought a lot before the flight what painting technique to apply. Finally, he chose a pencil, as neither oils nor watercolors could be used.

The museum representative has explained that all official papers are ready and the graphic works belong to Tretyakov Gallery according to all rules.

Moreover, The Thaw exhibition was not chosen by chance. The exposition has a special section devoted to the beginning of space exploration. Besides, the granting ceremony coincided with the premiere of the movie Time of the First.

It should be reminded that the movie narrates about flight of the Soviet Voshod-2 ship with cosmonauts Pavel Belyaev and Alexei Leonov. They set off to the orbit on March 18, 1965. It was Alexei Leonov who became the first man to walk into the void of the space. He stayed there for more than 12 minutes.
