First exhibition of Eugen Gabritschevsky's art opens in NYC

15.03.2017

Eugen Gabrichevsky. Self-portrait

A fascinating and first in-depth exhibition of Eugen Gabritschevsky's art opened at the American Folk Art Museum in New York today.

Born in 1893, in Moscow, Eugen started a very successful career as a biologist, studying genetics. In 1925 he was invited to Columbia University to complete his postdoctoral research. He never returned to Russia, moving to Paris instead, where he continued his research and studied fine art. At 33 he became world-renowned scientist for his knowledge on the laws of mutation in the lives of insects. In 1929 his scientific career abruptly came to an end when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and later locked into a mental hospital near Munich.

Over the next 50 years of hospitalization, until his death in 1979, he produced thousands of paintings and drawings fully devoting himself to art.

So-called Outsider Art in this case presents not only ‘outsider’ but rather fantastic exhibition that features over 100 works and archival documents of this incredible artist.
