Sami National Day is celebrated in the Murmansk Region

The International Sami Day celebrated on February, 6 is turned into a true festival in the Murmansk Region. More than two hundred different activities are planned here. Specialists from the regional center of the Northern minorities advised that the special events include school lessons, exhibitions, round tables and many other activities.

In particular, locals and guests of Murmansk can attend the exhibition “The reflection of Northern Beauty in the Hands of Craftsmen”. Items of Sami’s decorative and applied arts are exhibited at his exhibition. Sami musician Johan Sara arrived from Norway to give a concert of traditional songs.

Currently there are 35 Sami communities the region. Their occupations are deer farming and fishing. Much attention is paid to preservation of Sami language and their culture. This was the main topic of discussion at the round table “Ancient Traditions of Kolskiy Sami: from heart to heart” which was conducted in the village Lovozero. The first musical “Sun above Tundra” will take place in that village too. The music was composed by Ivan Matryekhin, and the plot is based on the fairytale of Sami writer Pavel Yuriev. The musical tells a story of a young Sami man, whose people live in the eternal winter and Polar night. He hits the road to the Sun to the sky with his countrymen and deer – friend along the way.
