Russkiy Mir Foundation Opens Russian Center in Syria

On April 10, a Russian delegation visited Damascus to discuss bilateral cooperation between our two countries. Sergey Shurigin, Deputy Director of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, was a member of the delegation. An agreement on the foundation of the Russian Center was made during the meeting between Sergey Shurigin and President of Damascus University Mohammad Hassan Al Kurdi. The parties to the agreement contract discussed the matters referring to the Russian Center activities including the delivery of study materials and methodical literature required to teach students Russian and providing the Center with up-to-date technical training aids.

A Russian Center combines the functions of a class room and a platform for communication supplied with a library and multimedia training tools. Normally Russian Centers are provided with computers and a set of educational programs and their visitors are supposed to have the access to Russian libraries data bases and periodical editions. Students can learn to communicate in Russian, learn about Russian classical and contemporary culture and take part in various events arranged by the Center.

The members of the delegation had meetings with the Minister of Education of Syria Hazwan Al Waz, with lectures and students of the department of the Russian language at Damascus University and were present at commencement exercises for the graduates of the Tourism department and visited a school where children are taught the Russian language.

An agreement on holding a week alignment workshop under the auspices of the Russian Synergy University for Russian language teachers was made.

Since 2015, the Russian language has been compulsory second foreign language school students are to learn at all schools in Syria. On the whole, about 7500 school students learn Russian now. The department of the Russian language was established at the Damascus University in the fall of 2014. In the near future, a Russian school for Syrian children is supposed to be built in Damascus.

As a member of the Russian delegation, Executive Director of the Synergy University Vadim Lobov said, on Wednesday the Higher Education Minister Dr. Mohammad Amer Mardini is to arrive in Moscow to take part in the opening ceremony of the Russian language online learning center which activity is focused on Syrian students studying in Moscow colleges and universities.
