International Pushkin Festival Concludes in Milan

17.02.2016

On 13 February 2016, “Pushkin’s Autumn” concluded in Milan. The fourth international contest for Russian literature enthusiasts was organized by the "Russian Home-Italy" Association and its two Russian-language schools—the Leo Tolstoy School and the European Distance Learning Center for Children of Russian Compatriots established with support from the Russkiy Mir Foundation.

This year’s festival was co-sponsored by the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Over 500 children of Russian compatriots from around the world took part in the contest, competing in five categories. Contestants recited Pushkin’s poems, studied his life and works, wrote poems and drew illustrations in the course of three months. Their submissions and the results of the contest are available on the website dedicated to the festival.

The contest resulted in an international seminar that brought together educators and heads of foreign Russian-language schools, contestants and winners, counselors and scientists from Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Lebanon, China and the Czech Republic in Milan on 13 February.

The participants had a chance to take part in the programs for children of compatriots, students of Russian as a foreign language, teachers from Russian schools and parents. While teachers and parents took part in roundtables and listened to informative reports, children made drawings, watched a film on Pushkin’s life, learned how to write with quills and explored the history of the Mikhailovskoye Museum Reserve.

The seminar was followed by a Pushkin-themed ball at a concert hall. Polina Gelfreich, the association’s president, and Svetlana Kotikova, principal of the Leo Tolstoy School, announced the winners and presented them with certificates and gifts. This year saw the introduction of a new nomination, “For Preserving Pushkin’s Word,” aimed at the most ambitious Russian-language schools that took part in the festival. A family of Pushkin’s poetry enthusiasts was also awarded by the organizing committee.
