Meeting with Russian-Language Educators Held in Colombo

27.01.2016

The Russian Center of Science and Culture in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has hosted a meeting between Georgy Toloraya, Director of Regional Programs at the Russkiy Mir Foundation, and Russian-language educators from a number of Sri Lankan schools and universities.

It should be noted that Sri Lanka ranks second on the list of best education systems in Asia. 92 percent of its population is literate. Education is mandatory for children aged 5 to 14. Kelaniya’s largest university has dozens of students learning Russian, while its Russian Language Department is the oldest in the country. Russian is taught in other universities as well. The Association of Graduates of Russian and Soviet Universities is active in the country, with some 1,500 students from Sri Lanka currently studying in Russia.

Participants discussed the challenges in promoting Russian language and culture and the opportunities for implementing the programs of the Russkiy Mir Foundation (Russkiy Mir Cabinets and various grant programs) in Sri Lanka. The meeting was attended by Alexander Karchava, Russia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and Andrei Nazarkin, head of the Russian Center of Science and Culture.
