Russian Scholars Attend Seminar in Baku

09.12.2015

On 7–8 December 2015, the Baku Slavic University hosted a two-day seminar “Teaching Russian at Azerbaijan Schools and Universities: Specifics and Needs” organized in conjunction with the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (MAPRYAL) and the Russkiy Mir Foundation.

In his opening speech at the seminar, professor Asif Gadzhiyev, BSU Rector, spoke about the state of the Russian language in Azerbaijan and the university’s role in training specialists in the Russian language, literature and Russian studies, as well as research conducted in the field.

Ludmila Verbitskaya, MAPRYAL President and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, noted, “They preserve Russian as a norm-based, colorful, vivid language here. This is why we can’t help but celebrate the state of Russian in the country. Azerbaijan sets a good example for other countries in this regard.”

The seminar included a roundtable entitled “Nationally-Oriented Russian Language Textbooks for Azerbaijan School and Universities.” Leading professors from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Baku universities gave lectures and reports at the event. Lyubov Yakunina, Educational Program Coordinator at the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Azerbaijan and Chairperson of the Association of Teachers of Russian-Speaking Educational Institutions in Azerbaijan, spoke about the Russian Language Educational Center at the Russian Information and Cultural Center in Baku.

The Russian delegation also paid a visit to the Russian Center at the Baku State University.
