The change in status follows the decree signed in the spring by President Vladimir Putin on the awarding of honorary titles to the towns, increasing the number of "cities of military glory" in Russia to 45.

The Russian head of state noted that: "The 22 of June is a special date for Russians, a date which symbolises the war that united us and that will continue to unite us".

As reported by the information service of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, this day is commemorated in Russia as the Day of Memory and Mourning. Vladimir Putin, together with government ministers, parliamentary deputies, and veterans, laid flowers today at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier.

"In years of terrifying suffering our people displayed the greatest spirit of patriotism; we will always remember the achievements of our grandfathers and accord our veterans the veneration they deserve", said the president.
