Russian Center in Macau Joins First in Space Campaign

01.02.2011

The Russian Center at the University of St. Joseph in Macau, China, has prepared a program for participating in the Russkiy Mir Foundation’s campaign dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight.

The program includes research, lecture and musical components. The research component will entail the gathering of recollections about Gagarin’s flight in 1961. Students will pour through local newspaper from that time, interview journalists, military personnel, political figures and businessmen in an attempt to understand how people perceived this event. The results of this work will be presented in the form of a video on April 12 at an open seminar at the Russian Center.

The public lecture “Yuri Gagarin – The First Man in Space” will be delivered in cooperation with workers of the Macau Museum of Science at the university on April 12. A concert of Russian music in honor of the first cosmonaut will be organized at the Macau Cultural Center in early March. Four musicians will perform the music of composer Dmitry Shostakovich.
