The "Learn Russian Through Play" Project Has Helped Popularize the Russian Language in Germany

29.01.2010

The Federal Cup – 2009 project called "Learn Russian through Play", designed to increase interest in the Russian language among the youth of Germany, was carried out under a grant program of the Ruskiy Mir Foundation.

In 2009, the contest attracted 4300 students – for half of these pupils this was their first time studying the Russian language. The contest was carried out in several stages. The winners of school-wide and the regional games – 17 teams in all – entered the finals. Two pupils, Lena Rekovski and Zerina Tsoaeter won two-week trips to Russia. Those teams that came in second and third also received an opportunity to visit Russia.

The success of this project and the increase of its popularity seem to indicate that Russian language studies in Germany are changing for the better.

Currently the Russian language is the fifth in popularity among the youth – after English, French, Spanish and Latin.
