Russian Foreign Ministry Recommends Russians Leave Yemen

24.03.2011

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning recommending that Russians leave Yemen, Interfax reports. “We would like to recommend that Russian citizens refrain from travelling to Yemen without urgent necessity and that those Russian citizens currently in the country leave due to the rising security threats,” a statement from the ministry reads.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also appeals to the political forces in Yemen to find a way to peacefully find agreement and develop a plan for resolution of problems and political reforms and the further social-economic development of the country.

A state of emergency has been declared in Yemen, as the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh continues to hold onto power despite massive protests.  The state of emergency gives extraordinary powers to the country’s armed forces, puts the constitution on hold and introduces media censorship.
