Ukraine and Russia to Celebrate Gagarin’s Anniversary Together

The president of Ukraine has issued directives to provide for the hold of joint events of Ukraine and Russia in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first flight into space by Yuri Gagarin and the 120th anniversary of writer Mikhail Bulgakov, ITAR-TASS reports.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich directed Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko, Education Minister Dmitry Tabachnik and State Space Commission head Yuri Alekseev to ensure that Ukraine holds joint events with Russia in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gagarin’s flight.

Grishchenko, Tabachnik and Culture Minister Mikhail Kulinyak have been directed to reach agreements with their Russian counterpoints on joint celebration of the 120th anniversary of the birth of writer Mikhail Bulgakov.

According to the president’s press service, today the plan to hold the Days of Ukrainian Education and Science in Russia in 2011 should also be agreed upon. Furthermore, an interdepartmental coordination work group will be created to cooperate with Russia in preparation of the events in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
