Russian Language Issues Discussed by Presidents of Russia and Tajikistan

19.08.2010

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon met in Sochi on Wednesday, August 18, to discuss bilateral cooperation in various areas.  “I am glad to see you in Sochi. It has become a traditional place for our meetings,” the Russian president said while greeting the guest, ITAR-TASS reports.

Medvedev invited Rakhmon to discuss “all the issues we have: economic, political and international in the context of regional cooperation. This is not an easy region and we discussed current difficulties with our colleagues today from the fight against terrorism and the drug threat to joint responses to natural calamities.”

Rakhmon said relations between Russia and Tajikistan were free of any serious unresolved problems.  He said he was generally satisfied with the dynamics of bilateral relations and the steady tendencies in trade between the two countries.  “I’m really glad at an opportunity to meet with you, as this meeting will give us a chance to discuss the things that have been done already, as well as our plans for the future,” Rakhmon said.

“It will be important for us to hear the Tajik president’s assessment of the situation in Afghanistan and also in Kyrgyzstan. I believe that it will be of interest to President Medvedev to have Rakhmon’s opinion of the situation in Iran,” presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said.

“It is expected that serious attention during the meeting will be devoted to humanitarian issues, the further expansion of ties in education, the preservation of the Russian information space and the status of the Russian language in Tajikistan. Russian in that country enjoys the status of the language of interethnic communication,” Prikhodko said.  Rakhmon called for broader humanitarian cooperation with Russia and further development of the Russian language in the country.

Ramazan Abdulatipov, Rector of the Moscow State University of Culture and Art, who met with Rakhmon earlier this year to discuss “specific issues of cooperation, including the training of personnel for music institutions, libraries and theatres”, said, “An agreement will be signed this year at last on the opening of the Russian Cultural Centre in Dushanbe and the Tajik Cultural Centre in Moscow, which will promote better spiritual and cultural exchanges between the two peoples.”.

Speaking of Rakhmon's sincere interest in the development of the Russian language in Tajikistan, he said, “It's time to move from talking about the support of the Russian language in Tajikistan by Russia to developing effective specific programs for that purpose. Emomali Rakhmon also eagerly supported our initiative to hold an international humanitarian forum in Dushanbe next year,” Abdulatipov said.
