Russian Language to Be Given the Status of a Second State Language in South Ossetia

05.08.2010

South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity announced that Russian language would be given the statues of a second state language in the republic, IA Res reports.

“In the republic there is much talk today about the development of the Ossetian language, and this is a normal, as the state language is Ossetian. At the same, Russian language should be given the official status of a second state language on the territory of South Ossetia,” President Kokoity said at a roundtable.

The president noted the long-standing tradition of friendship and neighborly relations between Russia and South Ossetia should be further developed. “Most importantly, we must concentrate our efforts on not allowing our enemies to destabilize the situation and turn domestic issues into inter-state and international issues. That is the worst thing that could happen to us. We are fraternal peoples, and this was demonstrated not only in August 2008 but throughout the history of the Ossetian and Russian peoples,” Eduard Kokoity said.

According to the president, the artistic, academic and cultural intelligentsia of South Ossetia must think up and develop programs for developing and strengthening the positions of the Russian and Ossetian languages.
