Russian Becomes an Official Language of Legal Proceedings in Ukraine

The Russian language has been officially made a language of legal proceedings in Ukraine. Such legislation was approved by Ukraine’s Parliament and signed into law Tuesday by President Victor Yanukovich, Voice of Russia reports. 

Ukraine is home to the world’s biggest Russian-speaking community. More than 8 million people in Ukraine identify themselves as Russians, while almost 15 million others claim that Russian is their mother tongue. 

Legal proceedings have been held in in Ukraine in the Ukrainian language only since 2005. Non-speakers had to hire a translator to answer questions from the prosecution or the defense.
