Finnish President Says Russia is a Good Neighbor

21.07.2010

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Finnish President Tarja Halonen are holding negotiations in the Finnish president’s summer residence.

“Whenever I am asked why we develop relations with Russia, I always say that we are good neighbors, and good neighbors should meet regularly to exchange information and to carry on their good relationship,” Halonen said.

President Medvedev had conveyed greetings from St. Petersburg friends. “I can tell you that I have conveyed greetings from Valentina and Vladimir,” Medvedev said, implying St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Medvedev thanked Halonen for the invitation to visit Finland. “It is a great pleasure to come to Finland in the summer to continue the talks with the President of Finland because the weather here is wonderful. I have always loved travelling to Finland at this time of year, though I used to come in a somewhat different status,” he said.

The presidents held the first round of informal talks on Tuesday, while the official program of the visit will take place on Wednesday.
