Artek Children’s Camp Celebrates 85th Anniversary of Opening

17.06.2010

The All-Union Pioneer Camp Artek, which is now called the International Children’s Center Artek, opened in Crimea 85 years ago, RIA Novosti reports. Artek was founded as a camp for children suffering from tuberculosis following a proposal made by Zinovy Solovyev, the chairman of the Russian Red Cross Society.

According to a longstanding tradition, all nine Artek children's camps held festive camp lines. Artek veterans and former camp counselors met with pupils and colleagues. Artek Director General Olena Piddubna noted that for decades Artek has been promoting eternal values – honesty and kindness, understanding and friendship.

“To teach children of different countries to live in peace, harmony and mutual respect – such is the historical mission of Artek,” Piddubna stressed.

The main celebrations dedicated to the anniversary of Artek will be held in August.
