Federation Council Speaker Meets Compatriots in Uruguay

Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Russian Federation Council, has wrapped up a two-day working trip to Uruguay.

He met with vice-president and Chairman of the General Assembly and the Senate of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay Danilo Astori and discussed further development of cooperation between Russia and Uruguay and interparliamentary connections between the two countries. Both parties agreed that interparliamentary connections promote all the aspects of bilateral cooperation between our countries.

After the meeting Sergei Mironov told the press that he has invited Danilo Astori to pay an official visit to Russian Federation, and that he hopes that this visit shall take place in the nearest future.

Speaker Mironov also met with acting minister of foreign affairs of Uruguay Roberto Conde to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including the development of social and economic cooperation between the two countries.

On the final day of his visit, Mironov met Russian compatriots residing in Uruguay in Montevideo in the framework of his official visit to Uruguay. The Federation Council’s delegation participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition “Russian Ballet” composed of paintings by famous Uruguayan painter Eduardo Vernazza.

The exhibition is hosted at the headquarters of Latin American Integration Association (LADI) and it is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the association.

During the meeting with compatriots Sergei Mironov said: “Our efforts are aimed at uniting the representatives of Russian compatriot community, defending their rights and interests, and supporting Russian language and culture. There’s a huge potential for cooperation between Russia and Uruguay. And that fact opens up very good prospects for improving the lives of our compatriots”.

Sergei Mironov also met with Uruguayan President Jose Mujica. According to Sergei Mironov, Russia and Uruguay are ready to cooperate in high biotechnologies sphere. “We’re talking about creating remedies for rare diseases. Russia has very interesting groundwork on this issue, so I see this project as very promising,” Sergei Mironov stressed.
