Violence in Kyrgyzstan Makes Russians Consider Move North

21.06.2010

The riots in Kyrgyzstan have left 400,000 people homeless, according to the UN’s spokesperson the humanitarian efforts underway in the country.

In Bishkek there are reports of Russians leaving the country en masse. Worrisome rumors are causing anxiety among the Russian-speaking population and emigration is become a common topic of conversation.

The Russian consulate in Osh confirms that the number of requests for assistance in leaving the country has risen since violence broke out on June 11. “Last week we received about 200-300 such requests. Most of them are from tourists or people who have come here on business,” an embassy representative said, noting that it is much more difficult for entire families to move to Russia.

The airport in Osh is expected to open shortly and flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg will resume.
