Today is UN Russian Language Day

06.06.2010

Today, June 6, is designated Russian Language Day by the United Nations. The idea to mark ‘language days’ was first unveiled by the UN in February. The aim is to support and promote language and cultural diversity, Voice of Russia reports.

Another goal of the campaign is to sustain the equality of all six official languages of the UN: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, French and Russian.

According to UNESCO surveys, currently the Russian language is spoken by some 260 million people in many countries.

Special concerts, exhibitions, as well as stage and cinema performances are scheduled to mark the UN ‘language days’.
