Next Generation of Russian Piloted Spacecraft to Be Lighter and Thinner

Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia announced that it has completed the design of the next generation of Russia’s piloted spacecraft, RIA Novosti reports.

Vitaly Lopota, president of the corporation, said that the new spacecraft could hold a six-person crew and half a ton of cargo. This proposed transport system will include a launch vehicle and engine section. In comparison to the Soyuz rocket, the landing accuracy will be much higher. Due to the use of high-durability aluminum alloys and carbon fiber composites, the spacecraft will be 20-30% lighter.

Navigation will be aided by a specially developed mechanism, including GLONASS receptors and highly accurate optic and hydroscopic sensors.

The plans will be presented to the federal space agency Roscosmos by June 30, after which experts of the agency will carry out a technical review of the project and determine future measures for implementing it.

The tender to develop the design was held in early 2009 and Energia was the unanimous winner.
