Republic of Karelia Celebrates 90th Anniversary of Its Formation

One of the northern regions of the Russian Federation – Karelia – on Tuesday is marking the 90th anniversary since the formation of the republic, ITAR-TASS reports.

The press service of the regional government said that a monument to Karelian border guards established on the initiative of the council of veterans of the republic’s border guard troops was unveiled in the morning in the capital of Karelia – Petrozavodsk. About 16,000 border guards fell in combat during the Winter War of 1939-1940, as well as from September 1941 to 1944 in WW2 battles on the Karelian front.
