President Medvedev Begins Official Visit Ukraine

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev departs for Kiev on his first official visit to Ukraine, which is being seen as a sign of improving relations between Russia and Ukraine, Russia Today reports. Among other issues, the two sides will talk cooperation in energy and nuclear sectors.

According to the head of Russian president’s administration Sergey Naryshkin, both parties will sign “a solid number of bilateral documents” which include agreements on border demarcation and cooperation on the GLONASS navigation system.

He pointed out that the visit will help further develop “unprecedented intense and fruitful political dialogue” between the countries. Naryshkin noted that this is already the seventh meeting of the leaders since Victor Yanukovich came to power in February 2010.

The in addition to economic cooperation, the president’s will discuss “constructive cooperation between Russia and Ukraine to support the Transdniester settlement and also security issues in the Black Sea region, and the situation in Kyrgyzstan,” Naryshkin said.
