WWII Vets to Replay Historical Handshake

20.04.2010

In Newton, Iowa, WWII veterans prepare a replay of historic 1945 handshake US and Soviet soldiers shared on the Elbe 65 years ago, the Voice of Russia reports. Taking part in the event, scheduled for this coming weekend, will be veterans of the US 69th Infantry Division and Ukrainian veterans from Newton’s twin city of Smely. In April 1945 the 69th Infantry became the first to join up with advancing Red Army troops near Torgau, Germany.
