British Veteran Arctic Sailors Decorated in Moscow

04.05.2010

Twenty two British veteran sailors of the Arctic convoys received medals from the Russian Ambassador to the UK, Yury Fedotov, during a special ceremony in Moscow on Tuesday, Voice of Russia reports. The event marked the 65th anniversary since the end of the WWII in Europe.

“This is an extraordinary event. I am happy to be alive and be able to honor the memory of those who died in that horrible war”, Mr. Lisly Garrett, a British veteran Arctic sailor said.  The Arctic convoys of World War II travelled from the United Kingdom and the United States to the northern ports of the Soviet Union – Arkhangelsk and Murmansk. About 1400 merchant ships delivered vital supplies to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program.
