Literaturnaya Gazeta Turns 180 Years Old

Russia’s weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta has turned 180.

The newspaper’s first issue came out on January 13, 1830. It was founded by the poet Anton Delvig with the participation of Alexander Pushkin and Petr Viazemsky. It published works by other prominent poets, including Baratynsky, Koltsov and Kuchelbecker. The first work to appear in print by Nikolai Gogol was published by Literaturnaya Gazeta. The newspaper today attracts a wide range of readers in all regions of Russia and abroad and has a print run of 136,000 copies.
