15.01.2010

Russia will publish official data on the USSR human losses in World War II on the eve of the 65th Anniversary of the Victory, RIA Novosti reports. According to Alexander Kirilin, the Ministry of Defence official, the revision will only slightly affect the previous index - 26.6 million.

“This figure is most likely to remain unchanged. We might only revise the index reflecting military losses”, Kirilin said.

As of January 14, military losses of the USSR in WW II hit 8.8 million servicemen.

“On the eve of the Anniversary of the Great Victory we need to announce an official figure…in order to stop any kind of speculations on the subject”, the General said

Around five million USSR citizens were missed in action during WW II. These people were also regarded a lost during the calculation.

Alexander Kirilin added that the recalculation will most likely affect the current index of permanent losses (11.2 million people).
