Chekhov, One of Three Leading Writers Whose Works Appear on the Big Screen

Anton Chekhov is the only Russian writer, among the top-10 famous writers, whose books are often used as the basis for new films and TV programs, according to Kommersant.

Russia's first film, based on a story by Anton Chekhov, was "Romance with a Double Bass" – shot back in the 1911, the first foreign film was the "Superfluous Men" - 1926. The picture "A Hunting Accident" (1978) was nominated for the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie "Dark Eyes" (1987) - was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award, and the film's star, Marcello Mastroianni, was chosen as best actor in Cannes.

The top-10 list of world's leading writers that have had their works produced on the big screen is lead by William Shakespeare. His works have been portrayed 768 times. Anton Chekhov and Charles Dickens are tied for second place – both having the same number of films produced from their works - 287.
