Born on November 11, 1952

In 1975 Alexander graduated with a degree in history from Leningrad State Zhdanov University.

1975-1978 – postgraduate student of the Leningrad Division of the History of the USSR Institute of the Academy of Sciences.

1978-1988 – senior research fellow at the Leningrad Division of the History of the USSR Institute of the Academy of Sciences.

1987-1997 – head of the social sciences department, State Lesgaft Physical Fitness Institute.

1997-2001 – head of Russian and World History Department, St. Petersburg State University.

Since 2012 – head of the Centre of Expert Advice at St. Petersburg State University.
