Russian Is My Profession, And I Am Proud It Will Become My Job”

Cheng Ting, a student of Shanghai International Studies University became one of the winners of International Youth Arts Contest “It is for us to decide!” (Slovo za Nami) held in the framework of “Generation of the World” Youth Program. We asked him to share his impressions.

– Your essay was entitled “The Russian Language as a Language of International and Intercultural Communication”. Why did you choose this topic? What is so interesting about the language for you and how are you going to use it in your future career?

– I chose this topic because I do have something to say and I really want to say it. I am a master’s degree student and I have learned Russian for six years and one fourth of my life has already been closely associated with the Russian language; it has already come into my life. Russian plays an important role in the international arena as a language of international and intercultural cooperation.

I am interested in Russian, as it is the key to understanding Russian people and Russian culture. Although “there's just no understanding Russia”, I still have understood more about the Russian state of mind through communicating with Russians and reading the Great Russian heritage in Russian. Russians have a unique mindset, formed on basis of the language. In this sense, the Russian language reflects Russian soul.

I would like to work in a sphere connected with Russian in the future. Thanks to good relations between China and Russia, a specialist with a good command of the Russian language is easy to find a good job in China today. I want to become a diplomat. Russian is my profession and I am proud I will work with it. I am ready to give all of me for this holy cause, which helps Chinese and Russian people understand each other better, which strengthens people’s friendship and contributes to mutual profit and joint development.

– A decision to create an Association of Youth and Students, Learning Russian was made at “Generation of the World” Youth Forum. What does this organization should do?  

– I am voting for this marvelous idea, as young people united into a collective have unlimited opportunities. In case the Russkiy Mir Foundation will be able to create such a platform, it will be very interesting! It will also help in young Russianists’ exchange and in teaching Russian abroad. I want to be the first one to join Association of Youth and Students, Learning Russian, please!


– What stuck to your memory during the “Generation of the World” Youth Forum the most? What was the most interesting?

– I was touched by the Foundation’s employees at the “Generation of the World” Youth Forum. Awarding ceremony was held at the State Duma. It was a great honour for everyone. But I had the following circumstances: I gave my passport to the Department of the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation for multiple visa and they did not let me into the State Duma on basis of a reference issued by my University. The Foundation’s employees made everything possible in solving this problem, but the Law is the Law. Therefore, they decided to make a special awarding ceremony during the second day of the X Russian World Assembly.  

All the Foundation’s employees are the people of warm heart; they took care of me sincerely. I want to express my gratitude here, through the Russkiy Mir Portal. I was very touched by this and I am very grateful for everything you have done for me! Thank you!

I also met friends from different countries at the Forum. We had a great time together and this is the most unforgettable impression. We are like a big family, like brothers and sisters under the same roof and we speak the same language – Russian!

When Nektary Kotlyaroff, a fourth-generation Russian Australian and founder of the Russian Orthodox Choir in Sydney, first visited Russia, the first person he spoke to was a cab driver at the airport. Having heard that Nektariy's ancestors left Russia more than 100 years ago, the driver was astonished, "How come you haven't forgotten the Russian language?" Nektary Kotlyaroff repeated his answer in an interview with the Russkiy Mir. His affinity to the Orthodox Church (many of his ancestors and relatives were priests) and the traditions of a large Russian family brought from Russia helped him to preserve the Russian language.

Name of Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko is inscribed in the history of Russian theater along with Konstantin Stanislavski, the other founding father of the Moscow Art Theater. Nevertheless, Mr. Nemirovich-Danchenko was a renowned writer, playwright, and theater teacher even before their famous meeting in the Slavic Bazaar restaurant. Furthermore, it was Mr. Nemirovich-Danchenko who came up with the idea of establishing a new "people's" theater believing that the theater could become a "department of public education."
