The employees of the mass media outlets celebrate their professional holiday, Parlamentskaya Gazeta reports. The date was not chosen by chance: on this day, the first issue of the Vedomosti newspaper was issued by decree of Peter I in 1703.

Before the October Revolution in Russia, the number of periodicals exceeded 3,000. And after 1917, the holiday was named the Day of the Soviet Press. During the USSR days, it was celebrated on May 5, the day the first issue of the Pravda newspaper was published. In the early 1990s, the authorities returned the holiday to the previous date.

To date, about 60,000 media outlets are registered in the Russian Federation. From 1990 to 2012, the number of new media registrations increased, among them were not only print publications, but also online media. Last year, the government started issuing subsidies to socially significant electronic media projects.
