The anniversary of the founding of the Russian Empire is celebrated today. Russia was declared an empire by Peter the Great on October 22, 1721, after the victory in the Northern War. 300 years have passed since this date, Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes.

The State Historical Museum has prepared an exhibition entitled "The Empire" to commemorate this date. Its exposition tells about the peoples which inhabited the country, including Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians.

The new site of the State Historical Museum has been recently launched in Tula. "The Romanovs" exposition dedicated to the imperial house of Russia has opened there.

State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin called the foundation of the empire a qualitative change. A scientific conference will be timed to coincide with the anniversary date, which will be held by the Institute of the CIS countries, headed by Zatulin.

The Russian Historical Society organizes a series of events both in Moscow and around the country, said the president of the Faculty of History of Lomonosov Moscow State University Sergei Karpov.

Earlier, an exhibition kicked off in St. Petersburg in honor of the anniversary. Unique historical documents are exhibited there. The exposition was organized with the participation of  federal and city archives. They were joined by the Pavlovsk Museum-Reserve. About 500 documents are presented to the attention of the visitors, including drawings and photographs from the state register of unique documents of the Archival Fund of Russia.
