Artists from 25 countries to take part in Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art

19.09.2017

Yuriy Lapitskiy from Tomilino, Russia/wikimedia.org7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art starts today, September 19 in The State Tretyakov Gallery of Contemporary Art.

The director of Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova has marked that the decision to host the Biennale was not the easy one. Tretyakov Gallery staff had to clean up the art space from all expositions, including permanent ones.

Japanese art expert, the Chief curator of Tokyo's Museum of Contemporary Art Yuko Hasegawa is chosen to be the curator of the Moscow Biennale. Zelfira Tregulova has marked humanistic orientation of the exhibition that is curated in a very delicate way. Tregulova said she is delighted that Yuko Hasegawa had been chosen as curator, remarking that, "a Japanese person simply cannot organize an ugly exhibition."

52 artists from 25 countries participate in the Main Project. Among them are such well-known artists as Matthew Barney, Olafur Eliasson, and famous Icelandic singer Björk.

The Main Project uncovers Clouds⇄Forests topic, which, according to Yuko Hasegawa, “focuses on artists as a creative tribe transitioning, expanding and dissipating, from forest to cloud, rebuilding the subjectivity of spectators and showing that creativity is vital to the creation of new environmental spheres.”

Bienalle will conclude on January, 18 2018.
