Baryshnikov receives Praemium Imperiale art award

Paris 1979 // Photo Nina AlovertBallet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov has received one if the most prestigious Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award given by the Japan Art Association. It is given every year since 1989 to the most remarkable culture and art professionals.

This lifetime achievement award celebrates artistic fields not covered by the Nobel Prize, coming with a substantial. And it comes with quite a notable monetary prize of $136,000.

Baryshnikov is one of five winners this year. The other celebrated cultural activists are Senegalese singer and songwriter Youssou N'Dour, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui and Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. A ceremony will take place in Tokyo on October 18. Japan's Prince Hitachi himself is going to honor the 2017 award recipients with gold medals.
