300 tons of scrap metal removed from Wrangel Island

04.09.2017

FSBI State Reserve Wrangel IslandAn ecological unit of Eastern Military District collected more than three hundred tons of scrap metal at the Wrangel Island (Ostrov Vrangelya), located in Chukotka autonomous okrug. Soldiers plan to transport all garbage left on the Island during the Soviet period to the continent, RIA Novosti reports.

Helicopters will deliver press machines and other equipment from Anadyr to the Wrangel Island. These tools will be used to process the waste metal, which will help transport more waste at a time. Military ecologists have to press thousands of rusty barrels and send them to the Big Land afterwards.

The Wrangel Island located at the North East of Russia in the Arctic Ocean is a part of natural reserve included into the UNESCO World Heritage list. As part of Year of Ecology declared by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Eastern Military District ecologists conducted works aimed at environmental rehabilitation.
